- Inhalt
- Scholars working on syntax used to rely on their own judgments to answer such questions as: What is the difference between “My grandmother bought a radio for my sister.” and “My grandmother bought my sister a radio.”? Why do we rather ask “Who bought what?”, and not “What who bought?”? In 2005, Wasow & Arnold deplored: “theory development tends to follow its own course, tested only by the unreliable and sometimes malleable intuitions of the theorists themselves” (Wasow & Arnold 2005:495). Fifteen years later, linguist’s methods have changed, and one can no longer imagine linguistic research without experimental syntax. In this proseminar, we will wonder how theory and experimental methods have influenced each other in linguistic research, by looking at some specific phenomenon of word order. We will see how researchers approached these questions experimentally, and what their results taught us about language. This proseminar will therefore be a mix of theory on word order variation in English and of some practical considerations on the right methodologies in language science.
