-- John Fowles, The French Lieutenant's WomanJohn Fowles is one of the earliest, most popular and influential voices of the postmodern novel in the English-speaking world. At the same time highly cerebral and vastly engaging, Fowles manages to combine a fine sense for suspense and characterisation with a conspicuously self-reflexive approach to story-telling. Drawing on a panoply of narrative forms, he constantly lays bare the very act of narration, conspiratorially inviting his readers behind the scenes. However, he also persistently works on catching his audience off guard to draw them back in at the next possibility, demonstrating his talent as a masterful story-teller.
In this seminar we are going to tease out the characteristics and explore the narrative potential of the postmodern novel exemplified by The Collector, The French Lieutenant's Woman and A Maggot. Please make sure to acquire and read all of the novels before the seminar starts so we can draw on a solid basis for discussion.
