Leistungsbeurteilung (5 ECTS):
Präsentation (tw. in Gruppenarbeit, tw. in elektronischer Form), Hausarbeit (tw. in Gruppenarbeit, tw. in elektronischer Form) und Diskussionsbeteiligung (tw. in Gruppenarbeit, tw. in elektronischer Form). Regelmäßige Teilnahme an den Sitzungen. Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht.
- Contents:
- In recent years and around the globe, our communication behavior and media use have shifted dramatically. At the same time, international events, looming crises, and long-term socioeconomic trends introduce crucial questions about how we communicate as societies and individuals: How should we talk about climate change? What enables social movements like BLM or #MeToo to voice their demands effectively? How does misinformation spread? How does a rising China shape the media landscape? How does constant social media use influence our health and well-being?
We are going to address these and more key questions from the viewpoint of communication science and media psychology. In this seminar, we will get to know current research and theories that can help explain central issues of our time. Building on these insights, we will then engage in critical discussions of these issues with a focus on media and communication technology and their practical as well as ethical implications. By completing this seminar, participants will learn to analyze and understand current issues from a communication perspective. The seminar will be held in English (incl. presentations & discussions). The term paper can be written in either German or English.

- Contents:
- Sustainability management is a multi-facetted concept that encompasses many topics and issues. These range from climate change to the fight against poverty.
The purpose of this lecture is to gain a deeper understanding of such critical issues in sustainability management. To this end, the lecture does not only shed light on selected sustainability trends and the background of these challenges. More importantly, the course also aims at a systematic understanding of relevant management tools and novel instruments across all corporate functions to cope with these sustainability issues.
The three sustainability issues addressed in this class will be climate change, resource scarcity as well as poverty and underdevelopment.
For each of these issues, we will first provide background details, their positive and negative consequences as well as on their potential challenges and opportunities for businesses. Following, we will address broader concepts in sustainability management that aim at addressing the sustainability issue. In a third step, we will then introduce concrete tools and instruments that is ‘how to’ knowledge for implementation.
For example, in the case of climate change, we look at the science, politics, economics and effects on companies. . We then look at concepts such as “putting a price on carbon” or “decarbonizing value creation”. In terms of management instruments, tools such as carbon accounting, carbon compensation, and carbon efficiency measures will be discussed. “Best-practice” and “worst practice” serve to illustrate the practical implementation of these instruments.

- Globale Ereignisse und Themen beeinflussen unser Leben teilweise erhebliche. Anders als bei lokalen Themen sind wir dabei im besonderen Masse auf die Vermittlungsleistung der Medien angewiesen.
(Massen)Medien sind nicht nur Vermittler von globalen Ereignissen, sondern auch Motor der Globalisierung. Durch die weltweite Vernetzung der Informationssysteme schaffen sie die Möglichkeit weltweit an Ereignissen teilzuhaben. Nationale und kulturelle Grenzen, die Kommunikationsräume in der Vergangenheit bestimmt haben, verlieren an Bedeutung.
In diesem Seminar behandeln vor dem Hintergrund der Themen Pandemie und Klimawandel die Bedeutung von globaler Kommunikation auf beiden Seiten des massenmedialen Kommunikationsprozesses.
