The module Communication Electronics deals with aspects of circuitry and signal processing of wireless communication systems, built up as so-called “Software Defined Radio” systems. A receiver of a simple telemetry system serves as an example, being examined starting from its antenna to the user data output. The focus lies on the structure and the characteristic of the receiver’s hardware as well as the algorithms for the reception of telemetry signals. A typical system is implemented using a miniaturized receiver and processing with the MATLAB-compatible Octave math program. The required software is provided to the students.
Lernziele und Kompetenzen:
1. The students will understand the basic operation of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) system, i.e. the students will understand how the individual signal processing steps work as well as the signals themselves.
2. The students analyze the performance of the analog components of an SDR system and are able to apply procedures for optimizing these components independently.
3. The students analyse the digital processing steps of selected modulation types and are able to create the digital signal processing of an SDR transmitter and receiver themselves.
