The research focus of the Lehrstuhl 3 (chair of computer architecture) is the area of parallel and reliable
dataprocessing and system architectures.
We examine the theoretical foundations as well as aspects and means of
design and assessment of fault-tolerant computers and embedded systems.
Another research topic is the development of efficient evaluation tools
for reliable systems on the basis of UML and generalised stochastic petri nets.
In 1966, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Händler became the first
head of the department after the establishment of the predecessor of the
Institute of Computer Science, the
"Institut für Mathematische Maschinen und Datenverarbeitung (IMMD)"
(Institute for Mathematical Machines and Data Processing).
In 1989, the chair was taken over by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Mario Dal Cin.

Virtual Computers, Virtual Networks Participation in International Exchange Programs
In the AE3-Project (American-European Engineering Exchange), we offer opportunities for one-year student exchanges with 35 partner universities in the USA. The program is open to all students of the Technical Faculty. For more information, see http://www.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/Studies/studyabroad.shtml#AE3
In the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program, several Erlangen students were placed in partner universities throughout Europe; in exchange, students from abroad found their way to the FAU. More information about SOCRATES/ERASMUS is available at http://www.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/Studies/studyabroad.shtml#SOCRATES
The contact person for exchange activities is W. Hohl.
