- Media and communication technologies permeate our daily lives, both at work and at home. These technologies (e.g., social media, videochat, smartphones) promise workers personal yet efficient communication in teams. However, they also challenge organizational members to deal with constant interruptions, digital stress, cyberbullying, or fast-spreading gossip. Recent developments towards more “flexwork” or “mobile work” have added new demands and accelerated old ones: Office and information workers use new media technologies regularly and interchangeably for both work and non-work activities throughout the day. Workers are more than ever challenged to navigate the technologically blurred boundaries between office and home, personal and professional relationships, and work vs. leisure time.
In this seminar, we will engage with these issues at the intersection of media and organizational psychology, information systems, and communication research. Taking the employee perspective, we will acquire deep knowledge about the individual benefits and challenges resulting from mediated communication at the work-home interface. A particular focus will be on empirical research investigating the implications of digital communication technologies for employee productivity, performance, and well-being. By completing this seminar, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how technology, organization, and user psychology interact in our daily lives. The seminar aims to provide evidence-based practical insights for those interested in optimizing organizational communication processes, technology design, and employee well-being. The seminar will be held in English (incl. presentations and discussions). The term paper can be written in either German or English.
