Contents
From early on, the idea of equal rights for all human beings has met with critical objections from different angles: While conservative critics have castigated the “abstractness” of cosmopolitan rights or lamented a one-sided focus on individuals, representatives of feminism or postcolonialism have pointed to male biases, Eurocentric assumptions and other “particularisms” factually interwoven in supposedly universal rights. Yet another line of criticism is driven by fear that human rights may inadvertently lead to an increasing de-politicization of public debates and a concomitant decline of democratic discourse. Moreover, in the face of the escalating climate crisis, proposals to expand the matrix of rights towards the inclusion of animals or all living beings have gained new momentum, while neo-Marxist critics question the role of human rights within a globalized world marked by economic power asymmetries. The seminar is based on the understanding that human rights can benefit from exposure to relentless criticism. At the same time, there is a need to come up with counter-criticism, including responses in support of human rights.
