Visualisierung von Tiefseekorallen und Kaltwasserriff-Modellierung

In marine biology and palaeontology cold water coral reefs are investigated in detail at the moment. Due to their recent discovery the extent of these ecosystems and their present conservation is largely unknown. Deep sea reefs are under constant threat by fishing industries scraping the seabed with deep sea trawling devices thus destroying the coral colonies and their extensive reef structures. In this research project the structure of the coral skeletons are investigated and mathematically formulated by analysing ct-scans of sample specimen. By synthetically growing colonies and reef complexes environmental factors shall be evaluated and influences modeled. Sedimentation, bio-erosion and further effects on reefs are to be modeled and evaluated. A database for classification is to be formulated.
