Contents
Starting out as a literary form that was considered by most contemporary readers as of low taste, Gothic Fiction has become one of the most successful subgenres of the novel. This seminar will introduce students to key texts and situate them in the cultural and intellectual context from which they arose.

Recommended literature
Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto
Jane Austen, Northanger Abbey
George Eliot, The Lifted Veil
Bram Stoker, Dracula
Any reliable edition of the texts will do. We will read them in the order listed above. Students should have completed reading Walpole’s novel for the first week of the semester.
